HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER FAQ

Since the question comes back a lot, we thaught it would be helpful to indicate how to become a member.

  • You just have to show up at the club. Just drop by between 5pm and 9pm on Saturday nights only. We're not there the rest of the week.
  • The club meetings are held in room B-2325 (that's on the second floor) in the Jean Brillant building on the University of Montreal campus. Sometimes, the meetings are moved to room B-0245 (this is in the basement of the Jean Brillant Building). A note will be on the door of B-2325 telling you where to reach us in any case.
  • Outside the meeting room you'll see a table with a few people around it, sitting and talking. Just tell those guys that you'd like to become a member and they'll take care of you.
  • Membership is 15$ for a full year and since the '99 fall semester a picture of you, to be put on your membership card, is required. So don't forget to bring it. This is to make sure that the actual owner of the card gets the discounts he/she is entitled to in the comic shops that sponsor us.
  • If you don't have a blank, unopened video tape with you the day you register it's okay. Just bring it the next time you drop by the club, to get your card for example. By the way, we're pretty strict when it comes to the brands of tapes we accept. Don't bring a Chateau, Radio Shack or better yet a Pulser tape! Either a TDK or Maxell brand tape will be accepted. Remember, those tapes are used for the library. If we get cheap tapes, they wear down faster and they may break in your video decks!!!
  • Usually the membership card is ready the following week of your subscription. Only then will you be able to borrow tapes from the libraries (audio/video).
  • There are no age limits to become a member.
  • You do not need to be a university student to become a member.
  • You can become a member at anytime in the course of the semester.

That's all there is to it. If you really need more details, then email and ask. Eventually, we'll add more information here (if need be).

    CLUB RULES

The following rules can be modified without notice at anytime in the course of the semester. We will notify members of the changes in subsequent meetings and those changes will also be announced via the website. The rules and subsequent changes will be considered common knowledge for club members and club officers will act accordingly.

1 Services Available to Anime Central Club Members

    1.1 Audio and Video Library

    LIBRARY CONTENT

The Video library largely consists of fansubs, with the exception of a few French and English titles that are not commercially available here in Quebec. We do not whish to break the law on copyrighted material and we want to give the opportunity to north american companies to promote anime.

    TAPE BORROWING

Club members are allowed to borrow one video and/or one audio tape from the libraries every meeting upon presentation of the membership card.

    AVAILABILITY PERIOD

The audio and video libraries will be available from the second meeting untill two weeks prior to the end of the semester.

    HOW DOES IT WORK?

We have made a little change for this semester and it goes something like this: Members can borrow one video tape from the "regular" video library and one audio tape or one video tape from the "special" (marked SP) and orient extreme (marked OE) sections of the video library. In other words, you can borrow one video tape (from the regular section) and one audio tape or one video tape (from the regular section) and another video tape but from the SP and OE sections of the library. You cannot borrow 2 video tapes from the same section though, sorry. If you have questions do not hesitate to ask.

Since we have a "first come, first serve" access to the libraries, club members having an even numbered card will be allowed to borrow tapes first, followed by odd numbered cards. The following week, the odd numbered club members will be able to borrow tapes first, followed by even numbered members. This is done to give everyone a chance to get the titles they want to watch. Also, members who will want to borrow tapes will OBLIGATORLY have to be seated in the projection room by 6h30. Anyone outside after 6h30 without any reasonable motive will not be allowed to borrow tapes on this meeting. Those not wishing to stay in the screening room can always go to the cafeteria. Club members will have to produce their membership card in order to borrow tapes. They will have to show up THEMSELVES in order to be allowed to borrow tapes. Members are not allowed to borrow tapes with the card of another club member.

    RETURN POLICY

Members will OBLIGATORLY have to show their membership card at the moment they are returning their tapes. One can return the tape(s) of another member. Accordingly, the member returning tapes for another member will have to face the penalties if they apply. If the member is not in possession of his/her membership card (or the card of the member he/she is returning the tapes for) the member will have to keep the tape(s) until the next meeting where they can return them by presenting his/her membership card. Accordingly the member will have to face penalties for being late in returning the tapes.

    TAPE MAINTENANCE

Borrowed tapes MUST be rewound before being brought back to the club. This applies to BOTH audio and video tapes.

    PENALTIES

Tapes must ABSOLUTELY be brought back by 7h00, no later.
Anyone that brings a tape after 7h00 will not be allowed to borrow tapes for that meeting.
Anyone that brings a tape 1 week (1 meeting) after the date it is supposed to be returned will not be allowed to borrow tapes for that meeting and the following one.
Anyone that brings a tape 2 weeks (2 meetings) after the date it is supposed to be returned will not be allowed to borrow tapes for that meeting and the following 3 meetings!
Anyone that brings a tape 3 weeks (3 meetings) after the date it is supposed to be returned will not be allowed to borrow tapes for 4 meetings and will have to pay a 10$ fine. Anyone refusing to pay the fine will be automatically expelled from the club.
After 3 weeks or more, anyone that brings a tape will be automatically expelled from the club on top of having to pay the 10$ fine.
These fines apply to both the audio and video tapes and to anyone that brings back a tape for another club member.

    TAMPERING WITH THE TAPES

In the last semesters, we have noticed that some club members have had the wonderful idea to switch the original tape for a copy they have made of that tape. This is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN and is a very inconsiderate gesture towards the other club members. Anyone caught doing so will be AUTOMATICALLY thrown out of the club. We are not kidding. Special stickers were put on the tape shells and for any sticker that is ripped or in anyway has been tampered with, will bring the expulsion of the offending member.

LOSS OR DETERIORATION OF A TAPE

In case of loss or deterioration of a tape from the libraries, the member will be in the obligation to reimburse the cost of the tape (7$). If this happens more than once, the executive members may revoke the access to the libraries for this member.

    1.2 COMIC SHOP DEALS

The following stores have generously agreed to give club members rebate on their merchandise. Here is the list of stores where you can get discounts:

Empire Comix 1221 Crescent tel: (514) 871-1402 Métro: Guy-Concordia -15% on everything in the store.
Knowing Collection Inc. Chinatown 1112A Boul. St-Laurent tel: (514) 954-1112 fax: (514) 954-9976 Métro: Place d'Arme -10% on everything in the store.

    2 MEMBERSHIP CARD

    ACCESS TO MEETINGS

Members are in the obligation to produce their card at the entrance of the projection room. The executive commitee reserves itself the right to forbid access to anyone not bearing his/her card.

    DRAWINGS/CONTESTS

When a drawing contest is held each member must have his/her membership card in order to participate.

    LOSS OF MEMBERSHIP CARD

In the event that a member looses his/her card, he or she must immediately get a new card and a 5$ fee for the emission of the new card will be charged.

    3. PUBLICITY AND SOLLICITATION

It is strictly prohibited to distribute publicity or to sell anything in or around the projection room without the agreement of the club's presidents.

    4. ETHICS CODE

    (this applies to everyone)

We ask club members to abide by the following rules in order to keep the projection room's atmosphere enjoyable and to avoid undesired situations.

    CLEANLINESS

University policy forbids anyone to eat inside classes, but we will allow people to bring in snacks under the condition that garbages are put in the trash cans close to the projection room's entrance. If the room is not kept clean, and we can be billed for the cleaning, we will not allow members to bring food inside the projection room for the duration of the semester.

    RESPECT OF THE OTHERS

We ask that members refrain from making loud comments which might disturb other members. If you do not like was is presented, by all means, go outside of the projection room. This way members that do enjoy the screening will not be disturbed.

RESPECT OF THE OTHERS IN THE BREAKS

Since the audio and video tapes are borrowed in the two break sessions, we kindly ask that you do not push each other in order to get to the tapes first. It would be terribly sad if someone got hurt because someone wanted to get ahead in line. And as mentioned before, in order to be allowed to borrow tapes members HAVE TO BE SEATED IN THE PROJECTION ROOM BY 6H30 PM. And please, come out of the projection room in an orderly fashion.

    NON SMOKING POLICY

The University's policy forbids smoking inside university buildings and that is for security matters. If you must smoke, you must go outside the Jean-Brilliant building. We will be extremely strict on this matter and the appropriate measures will be taken in case of an offense.

    GENERAL RESTRICTIONS

It is forbidden for members to get on the stage and go behind the video console. This area is strictly reserved to the executive members which are in charge of the projection.

And again, we cannot stress enough that it is now forbidden to borrow tapes (audio and/or video) with another member's card.

    5. EXPULSION

The club presidents reserve the right to expell anybody which interferes with the projection in any way.
